Peasant children - Vladimir Egorovich Makovsky. Canvas, oil.
Vladimir Makovsky refers to realist artists. He was a member of the Wanderers Society. His paintings show without embellishment the life of peasants and workers of the late 19th century.
Often Makovsky traveled in search of new images. Ukraine was especially inspired by its distinctive nationality and picturesque nature. The artist left many works devoted to Little Russian themes.
In the picture "Peasant Children" we see the Ukrainian village. They live here poorly. The houses are unpretentious with typical thatched roofs. In the foreground, the artist depicted a group of children. Apparently, this is a village "kindergarten." The kids have not yet grown up to work on an equal basis with adults, they were left under the supervision of an old woman. Their parents work in the field, so the village looks empty.
Children are of different ages. There are some kids, like the one who weeps, sitting without pants on the ground. Another little boy is about to cry next to him. Probably they want to go home to their mothers.
Those older are divided into groups. The boys on the right are carried away by an interesting conversation. They consider themselves too old to be known with the baby. Next to my grandmother were girls. One of them is passionate about needlework. The village children got accustomed to the hard work early, which then accompanied them all their lives.
The old woman is not sitting idle either. She spins yarn. The woman thought about something, but judging by her face, her thoughts were gloomy. Hens roam the yard. Nobody pays attention to them. In the background is a young woman with a bucket in a row of rickety little houses. It seems that the girl is pregnant, so she stayed at home.
The picture leaves a double impression. On the one hand, we see the poverty of the situation. The plot makes you think about the difficult peasant share. On the other hand, Makovsky portrays young children who are cute in their spontaneity. The picture is very bright, sunny. A clear blue sky stretches over the Ukrainian village. He is contrasted by earthy houses and bright green under his feet. All together creates the effect of a quiet village noon and gives peace to the viewer.
